Where to go in Istanbul

Tekfur Palace Museum | Palace of Porphyrogenitus

Also known as the Palace of Porphyrogenitus, this Byzantine palace is located around the walls of the city between Edirnekapi and Egrikapi. As the only existing Byzantine palace and an example of the Byzantine architectural style, its importance is not limited to Istanbul.
The details of its construction are obscure, when, by whom and for whom it was built remains unknown. The ruins around it imply that it was not an individual palace, but a part of a larger palace complex. In its present state it consists of a roof-less three-story structure. In the 16th century, a new roof was built on the palace structure, but it was lost in the 17th century. The palace was in ruins during the early 20th century but was reconstructed between 1955-1970.This museum is located between Edirnekapi and Egrikapi, along the ramparts going towards the Kariye Museum, not open to the public; visits only with special authorization.
